Atlantic Innovation, Made Real
This year marks a milestone for both Genome Atlantic and the Genome Canada Enterprise: our 25th anniversary. Since 2000, Genome Canada and its six regional Genome Centres have been working together to put Canada at the forefront of genomics research and innovation.
Collectively, we have enabled more than 640 Genome Canada-funded, large-scale, world-class projects, strengthened Canada’s economy, and improved the health and well-being of communities across the country.
Genome Atlantic has proudly carried this vision into Atlantic Canada. From the beginning, our mandate has been to harness the power of genomic biotechnology and apply it to practical solutions that advance our region’s economy, environment and health. What began as a bold idea has grown into a driving force for change. Today, genomics is woven into the fabric of our region’s key industries – helping oyster growers combat shellfish disease, giving foresters climate-ready trees, supporting green energy goals, and improving health outcomes.
The year 2024-2025 was an important one for Genome Atlantic, defined by record investments, transformative partnerships, and the scale of our project portfolio – all of which showcased the reach and relevance of our work. At the same time, the 25th anniversary also offers a chance to reflect on the innovations and partnerships that have shaped our journey.
Together, the stories in this Annual Report – past and present – reflect Genome Atlantic’s core purpose: connecting industry with science to deliver innovation that strengthens our region’s economy, supports sustainability, and helps our communities thrive. They also celebrate our place in the broader Genome Canada Enterprise, a collaboration that has transformed genomics into a powerful engine that will continue to deliver economic impact well into the future.

Genome Atlantic is a not-for-profit organization and a member of the Genome Canada Enterprise consisting of Genome Canada and six regional Genome Centres.
Established in 2000, our role is to help the Atlantic Canadian economy benefit from biotech, and specifically genomics technologies. We work with private and public-sector partners to address business and regional challenges in agriculture, forestry, aquaculture and fisheries, energy, the environment, mining and human health.
Our work spans the four Atlantic provinces, and since 2000, we have been instrumental in generating more than $165 million in applied R&D projects to help address our clients’ needs and deliver tangible socio-economic benefits.
Genome Atlantic’s work would not be possible without the business development funding support of the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency (ACOA) and the governments of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, as well as core operational funding provided by the Government of Canada through Genome Canada.
